Thank you AST!

I was invited to speak at the annual meeting of the Oregon chapter of the Association of Surgical Technologists yesterday.  It was a great opportunity to connect with these vital yet under appreciated healthcare providers. Hopefully my talk was interesting and informative.

Most patients don’t even know about the role of a Surgical Technologist in ensuring the success of their surgery. So I thought I’d write a brief introduction.

Surgical technologists play a crucial role in ensuring successful surgical procedures. Often working behind the scenes, they are essential members of the surgical team who contribute to patient safety and positive outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

🔹 Preparation: Before surgery, surgical technologists prepare the operating room by sterilizing instruments, arranging equipment, and ensuring everything is ready for the procedure.

🔹 Assisting During Surgery: They pass instruments to surgeons, maintain a sterile environment, and anticipate the surgeon’s needs to keep the procedure running smoothly.

🔹 Post-Surgery Care: After the operation, they assist with cleaning the room, managing surgical tools, and ensuring proper sterilization to prepare for subsequent patients.

Why Surgical Technologists Matter:

✅ They improve efficiency in the operating room.

✅ Their attention to detail reduces the risk of infection and complications.

✅ By supporting surgeons and nurses, they help ensure patients receive the best possible care.

Surgical technologists are truly the unsung heroes of the operating room — combining technical expertise with precision and care to save lives every day. If you’re considering a healthcare career, this rewarding field offers meaningful work and the chance to make a real impact.
