It’s true that spine surgery cannot fix every problem. Many patients are disappointed to hear that spine surgery may not be the answer to their problem.
However, there are also many patients who are excellent candidates for spine surgery. In fact, there are specific conditions that a spine operation has a very high likelihood of fixing. Of course, no one wants to have a surgery that they don’t have to have. But if you have significant pain that has not responded to non-surgical care, a surgical consultation may be the logical next step. A consultation does not mean that you will have surgery, but gives you the opportunity to explore your options.
Some common spinal conditions that routinely benefit from surgery include lumbar and cervical disc herniations, spinal or foraminal stenosis, and spinal instability. If the location where you are experiencing the pain corresponds with your examination and your imaging findings (MRI, CT, X-rays, etc.), your chance of getting better with surgery often exceeds 90%. Success does not necessarily mean that you will be pain free, but that your pain and ability to do normal activities are improved.
Spinal deformity is another reason for pain that surgery can often help. Some common deformities include scoliosis, kyphosis, or kyphoscoliosis. However, surgery for a spinal deformity is usually a major operation which requires a prolonged recovery. The potential for benefit from a deformity operation is variable and depends upon a variety of factors. As each spine deformity is unique you will need discuss your specific case with Dr. Ball. Usually, multiple office visits are required.
There are other reasons to have surgery besides pain and disability. These conditions are more rare and require individual attention. They can be discussed during you appointment if needed.
